Forget about a top 12. American Idol season 10 picked its top 13 finalists of the season last night (March 3) in the season’s first live results show. For the first time ever, Idol went straight from the top 24 to the top 13, choosing the finalists by the top five girls and top five guys voted on by America and three wildcard slots voted on by the judges after a ‘sing for your life’ round.
Avoiding the sudden death sing-off and making it into the top 13 by earning America’s votes were Casey Abrams, James Durbin, Jacob Lusk, Scott McCreery, Paul McDonald, Lauren Alaina, Haley Reinhart, Thia Megia, Karen Rodriguez, and Pia Toscano.
Making it through after impressing the judges in the sing-off was Stefano Langone, who took it to church with a soaring rendition of Smokie Norful’s “I Need You Now,” Ashthon Jones, who played up her diva persona by singing “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going,” and Naima Adedapo, whose earthy and soulful voice on “For All We Know” carried her through.
The newly named top 13 perform for America’s votes on Wednesday, March 9.
